Catalytic Converter Theft in our 'hood :(

7/20/2021

First, what is a catalytic converter and why is it important?
As the name says, it converts harmful emissions from your vehicle into less harmful gases, helping to save our environment.  On the left it is the circular item with round ends that connect to your exhaust.

How do you know it has been stolen?   Suddenly your car sounds like a tank.  One day you drive it and the car is normal, the next it's very, very loud.  Typically the thieves will crawl under your vehicle at night and saw off the part so you get a nasty surprise the next morning.  Toyotas (Prius), Honda Element and any vehicle that sits high off the ground (work vans) are the primary targets as their converters are most accessible.  Here in the Museum District, Fan and Scotts Addition we are experiencing these thefts often.
So, what do you do if this happens to you?  Call us at Cutshaw.   We are experienced at replacing this part and working with your insurance company to make the process as painless as possible for you.   We are also the only garage in the city experienced at installing "Cat Security" a shield (picture above) that is rivetted onto your vehicle to cover the converter and make it MUCH HARDER to steal.
Whether your converter has been stolen, or you want to make sure it does not get stolen, we can help by installing a shield.  Pricing varies, approx $300 parts and labor.

When your  check engine light comes on you:
1. Panic
2. Ignore it
3. Hope it will go away.

So first, hope is not a strategy:)  Instead drop by Cutshaw Automotive and we'll connect our very expensive computers to your car and decipher the code crazy for you.  Most of the time, it's just something simple....you'll be glad you took care of it and can go safely on your drives.  If it's more complicated that's ok too because we are the Check Engine light experts.   There is a big difference between reading codes and googling the results and actually knowing what the codes mean and what to do about it.  Almost like reading another language.  Check engine diagnostic from $60.00

October State Inspection Due

10/5/2020

Time for your October Virginia State inspection - what do we check? We have an entire checklist that we have to go through, but here is the short list:
1. Check the tread depth (check for tire wear on the outside and inside of the tire for alignment issues).
2. Check your lights (headlights, backlights, reverse lights, marker lights, brake lights, turn signals and an often overlooked area: your tag light).
3. Check your mirrors (checking for cracked, chipped or missing mirrors).
4. Check your horn (no muffled sound).
5. Check your windshield for cracks or improperly placed stickers.
6. Check that your wipers are properly working.
7. Check that your defroster is operating.
8. Check dashboard for any warning lights.
9. Check the brakes and parking brakes.
10. Check the steering & suspension.
11. Check the exhaust system and air pollution control system.
12. Check the airbag readiness light.
If all items are approved, an inspection sticker will be given. If any issues are observed, they must be corrected and reinspected within 15 days. Don't wait until the end of the month. You cannot make an appointment for an inspection so you really need to pre-plan to bring it to Cutshaw Automotive

Oil Change 101

9/26/2020

You know your car like the back of your hand: its noises, how it handles, and where the seat needs to be adjusted to, to feel perfect! But we can all probably learn just a little bit more about our vehicle's finer details—like the kind of oil it needs for complete protection and top engine performance.

How can you learn how to keep your car's performance and efficiency at its absolute best, through oil changes?

Modern synthetic motor oil does a lot more than just lubricate. It's responsible for engine wear protection and engine performance enhancement as well as complete protection of all moving parts. Engine oil is comprised of two basic components--base oils and additives. The base oils constitute 70-90 percent of the total and are created from natural gas or crude oil, while additives round out the remaining 10-30 percent and can be variety of things.

Historically, motor oil was just a mixture of base oil and additives used to lubricate engine parts, reduce friction, clean, cool, and protect the engine. However, modern synthetic motor oils are a complex mixture of base oils and additive components designed to perform a variety of tasks:

*Separating and lubricating moving parts
*Reducing engine wear
*Helping to prevent deposits from forming on internal engine components
*Removing and suspending dirt and contaminants in the oil until these contaminants can be removed at the next oil change
*Cooling engine parts
*Enhancing engine fuel efficiency
*Providing protection across a wide range of temperatures
*Operating hydraulics in variable valve timing

As newer engines are built smaller and running hotter, a thinner weight oil such as 0W provides protection to critical engine parts, while also providing other benefits such as fuel economy and extreme temperature performance.

Cutshaw can help you choose the correct oil for your oil change. Bring your baby by and leave the oil change to us!

You still need Air Conditioning in September in Virginia!

Air Conditioning not working?

Car air compressors are filled with refrigerant which is a gas that comes in a tank (like propane you use for your gas grill). The car's air conditioning system is made up of hoses, clamps, pipes etc... that use the refrigerant to create cold air and push it through the vents of your vehicle. Over time, any of those mechanical parts may wear, leak or break down, completely.

If your car is 7-years old or younger it is likely (rule of thumb) that the lack of cool air is caused by a leak in the air-conditioning system. Some of the refrigerant has escaped through valves or hoses (this is a Little Deal and simply needs to be topped off). A good mechanic shop, like Cutshaw Automotive will connect the vehicle to a machine and recharge the system to proper levels; at the same time, placing dye in the system so that if there is a large leak it can be identified quickly.

If your car is more than 7 years old it's possible that your air compressor is faulty. This is a Big Deal. Check this by opening the hood of the car turning the air conditioning on and listening to see whether you hear the air compressor turn off and on (over the course of a couple of minutes). If the air compressor, itself, is not functioning it may require replacement, an expensive undertaking.

Bring it in - we can help!

Back-to-school season is the ideal time to review your ABCs; the ABCs of car care, that is. The Car Care Council recommends that motorists brush up on their auto care knowledge to make sure their vehicle is operating at its most efficient level before the school year commences and the onset of fall and winter weather.

A – Always follow a vehicle service schedule.
B – Be sure to have your car inspected when you suspect there is a problem.
C – Correct the problem to help avoid the inconvenience and potential safety hazards of breaking down away from home.

“By following these three basic car care tips, motorists can address minor issues before they become more complicated and more expensive repairs,” said Nathan Perrine, executive director, Car Care Council. “The ‘Five Point Check-Up’ featured in our back-to-school video offers valuable maintenance and safety tips that will help families get their vehicles ready for transportation needs during the school year.”
