COVID-19 has NOT been kind to small businesses; many in fact have closed during this pandemic. Cutshaw Automotive has not. We'd love to earn your business. We've been around for many years, are minority owned (woman-owned), have a sparkling-clean lounge, a loaner car available and key-drop services as well as (during this time, temporarily because of COVID-19) pick-up service,  zero-contact service and curbside pay and pickup!

How can Cutshaw Automotive earn your business? Let's talk: 804-355-6666 or visit us at 3105 Cutshaw Avenue, Richmond, VA

Your neighborhood mechanic continues to do what we can for Richmond and Scott's Addition, even during the uggg...pandemic.

Hours have been shortened to accommodate needs (8-4pm Mon-Fri and 8-2ish Sat). Thankfully no one is sick at the garage, but a couple of employees are home homeschooling kids with no school/daycare!

We thank you for your patience and support as we continue to try to provide the best value and service, at the lowest price, in your neighborhood. We have installed a simple, clear and plastic barrier in our office and are social distancing and disinfecting surfaces, continually, as well are wearing masks, gloves and providing Zero Contact service to our highest risk customers. We have also, temporarily closed our waiting lounge and wrapped our doorknobs in copper (?? if you don't know why, google it - fascinating) and re-routed our delivery personnel.  Lastly, our new policies to protect us all:

*Disinfecting each door handle, steering wheel and gear selector (before & after service)
*Fresh gloves for each car.
*Wiping the counters down, hourly.
*Disinfecting each pen and clipboard, after each use.
*Insuring minimal contact for our high-risk clients: Call our number and an employee will bring paperwork and/or bill, to you. We can receive payment, in this way, too. If you need Zero Contact? We have drop-off envelopes & payment over the phone is available.

February Maintenance Suggestions

2/21/2020

Here is your seasonal maintenance suggestions:
  • Conventional wiper blades may not be able to cut it, through wet and heavy snowfall. Designed by a protective rubber boot to prevent clogging, winter windshield wipers feature beefed-up construction to lift the heavy snow and allow you to see your way out of the winter wonderland.
  • Inspect rubber hoses for cracks.
  • Inspect your battery (and connection) for dirt and corrosion.
  • Retest the heating and defroster systems.
  • Especially in colder weather months, make sure your car has a fully-functional heating system (and check your rear defroster grid by simply watching it work on a cold winter day).
  • We aren't in the north, but our friends up north suggest keeping your fuel tank at least half full to prevent freezing.
  • Even though most are good up to 50,000 miles, drive belts should also be inspected to assess wear and proper tension amongst the pulleys.
  • On top of seasonal maintenance - make sure you keep up with the oil changes. Most auto manufacturers recommend that engine oil changes should occur every three months or every 3,000 miles. And Oil Changes are a great time to check other fluid levels related to the operation of the car, such as the fluid for the automatic transmission and power steering.
  • As we head into spring, make sure to have Cutshaw Automotive check your Cabin Filter.  As the pollen thickens, the flowers bring unsavory conditions to allergy sufferers. With a growing number of vehicles’ cabin ventilation systems equipped with pollen filters, those summer drives are going to be much more pleasurable. It is suggested that you replace the filter every year.
  • Next? Air Conditioning (can you tell that we are already thinking about warmer weather?)

Car Care for heading into winter

Don't head into the holidays with a poorly-maintained vehicle. Regular, routine maintenance can help improve your gasoline mileage, reduce pollution, and most importantly catch minor problems before they become huge problems. Cutshaw offers classic service that you can trust - right in Scott's Addition of Richmond, Virginia.
3105 Cutshaw Ave, Richmond, Virginia 23230

  • We read your "owner's manual" more than you do!  Read your owner’s manual and follow the manufacturer’s recommended service schedules or trust us to do it, for you.
  • Check engine performance and driveability — hard starts, rough idling, stalling, diminished power will only be made worse, in colder temperatures.
  • Replace old/dirty filters. This is a great time of year to change your air, cabin and fuel filter - a poorly running engine is less efficient and burns more gasoline.
  • Keep a full tank of gas. Keeping the gas tank filled helps prevent moisture from forming.
  • Change your oil and oil filter — more often for city drivers and stop-and-go or drivers. This frequently-neglected services is the most essential to protect your engine.
  • The cooling system should be flushed (and refilled). And check the condition of drive belts, clamps, and hoses.
  • The heater and defroster must be in good working condition to pass inspection, for driver's visibility and for passenger comfort.
  • Replace old blades. Rubber-clad (winter) blades fight ice build-up and make sure to fill windshield washer solvent — you’ll be surprised how much you use during the winter months.
  • Have your battery checked. The only accurate way to detect a weak battery is with professional equipment.
  • Worn tires are dangerous in winter weather. Examine tires for remaining tread life, uneven wearing, and cupping; check the sidewalls for cuts and nicks. Check tire pressure once a month, letting the tires “cool down” before checking the pressure. Rotate as recommended. Don’t forget to check your spare, and be sure the jack is in good working condition. Under-inflated tires or poorly aligned wheels makes your engine work harder and thus use excess gasoline.
  • Have your brakes checked periodically for safety and to prevent costly repairs that can be caused by neglect.
  • The transmission is often neglected until a major failure. Routine checks and fluid changes at prescribed intervals can prevent very costly repairs down the line.
  • Always carry an emergency kit with you: extra gloves, boots and blankets; flares; a small shovel and sand or kitty litter; tire chains; a flashlight and extra batteries; and a cell phone and extra car charger. Put a few “high-energy” snacks in your glove box.

This information was gleamed from National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) - this nonprofit, independent organization is dedicated to improving the quality of automotive service and repair through the voluntary testing and certification of automotive technicians.
